Begin again

To begin, begin.” William Wordsworth

This week, we look back to the beginning.

Getting started can be a problem but it is easily solved by getting started.

Change is no secret. We can make a master plan complete with every little detail and we can revise and amend and review and wait for the perfect timing to be sure we are ready when we begin.

Or we can begin.

There will be challenges with either approach. We choose our challenges.

We select the seeds, prepare the soil, nurture the plants and prepare for harvest but weather is just one of the unpredictable elements farmers learn to live with. There is no such thing as a perfect season and there is no guarantee produce will sell in those few days it’s at its best. Still, seeds are planted every year.

When I wrote the first email in 2001, I was simply responding to requests from my network for natural content and connections. And I wanted to make it easy for everyone to make natural choices, so I offered everything to everyone for free.

There is no way I could have imagined, much less predicted, how the arrival of social media and smart technology would change the way we connect. Today, we have access to plenty of free content and connections in exchange for our privacy.

I knew nothing about email publishing or websites when I wrote my first email. Now, I am a programmer and designer with more than 3,000 published pages and 8 print editions in my portfolio. If I had to do it over again, I am not sure if I would do it differently because quite a few people have benefited from the information I have shared. But continuing to expand the content with technology I have been using for 10 years has become time-consuming and unsustainable.

Because it is my business and I run everything myself, I can change anything any time and change is in the air.

Times have changed, people have changed, priorities have changed … even I have changed.

When I started HK heartbeat, people thought I was crazy — and I believe there is a lot of value in a little crazy.

Thanks to Elon, word is getting out about our vision for electric Hong Kong. People are looking at the real cost of shopping and the #2Wplastic challenge has us looking at our waste. Our own Gary Stokes reminded Gordon Ramsey of his promise to remove blue fin tuna from the menu and we are beginning to recognize the value of Hong Kong nature for happy students.

Today, people think HK heartbeat is cool. I’m not so sure about being a trend with an end. I prefer the front of the wave.

Beginning today, I am beginning over with a 15-year advantage with a focus on the community that started it all.

Would you like to begin at the beginning?
