Global village

“The new electronic independence re-creates the world in the image of a global village.” Marshall McLuhan

This week, we are supporting each other.

The majority of local businesses offering natural products and services are small enterprises and one-or-two-person operations. We all started out small and we connected with each other to grow.

We like to believe we put our money where our mouth is when it comes to sustainable development, yet we often don’t look at the whole picture.

In order to offer an authentically natural product, we must take into account how we affect the lives of others in its production. Are we disrupting traditional lifestyles, destroying live-able homes, replacing local crops with commodities and introducing processed convenience foods without nutritional value?

In our connected modern lives, there is no place to throw stuff away.

We have introduced disposable plastic into third world communities with no instructions for disposal. Plastic doesn’t burn like banana leaves, coconut shells or wood and it will never return to nature like a clay pot or ceramic jar.

Maybe we will think again about recycling oil in its other form when we realize that fish eat plastic like teens eat fast food. Not only are we wasting a non-renewable resource, we are destroying another.

With volunteers continuing the cleanups to remove marine plastic we can see, our attention is also focusing on the plastic we can’t see. After many long conversations with Plastic Free Seas, Sa Sa has announced they will remove all microbeads from their branded products and ban microbeads in all other cleansing products sold in their shops.

Ideas are popping and tomorrow Hong Kong will be home to hundreds of new products and new solutions at NOPA16 where the focus is on changing our habits and shifting towards healthy lifestyles that good for our planet.

At times like this, we are reminded of our diverse global community and we would like to take a moment and send our love to Italy. We invite you to get in touch with our friends at The Italian Women’s Association and support disaster relief efforts in their home country.

What difference will you make in your village?

Naturally,
