Commit

“Once you commit to something, you’ve got to commit the whole way.” Malcolm McDowell

This week, it’s time to commit.

On Saturday, we gathered at Metta with a few friends to celebrate our Fifteen years of HK heartbeat. My personal life took an unexpected front seat for much of October, resulting in late invitations and no reminders so I relied on the newsletter to let everyone know about the party. It was during the event that I realized this was the first time I had celebrated an anniversary of HK heartbeat.

The event was exactly what I needed — casual, low-key and stress-free.

While I may have missed the opportunity to put on my PR hat and get lots of exposure, I used the time instead to connect one-on-one with plenty of time to let in the love and affection shared by those who attended and others who responded with kind words by email.

I am feeling particularly blessed as we move on to the next chapter.

Over these past years, we have grown from a small and dedicated group of natural pioneers quietly following their passion for conscious living to a dynamic growing community paving the way for a new way of living.

We no longer need to hide what we do from the outside world. It is getting easier meet people who think like us and to join events where no one in the room thinks we are weird and everyone is interested in what we have to say.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that ours is not the alternative lifestyle.

As we continue to connect and share with each other, we raise awareness and attract new followers who are ready to find what they’re looking for — especially when they’re not sure what they’re looking for. In a world where fear dominates, we know that acceptance is the key to peace.

There have been many times over the years when I worried about next month’s rent and wondered whether I was doing too much for everyone else without enough return for myself. Looking back from this moment, I wouldn’t change a thing. The lessons have been great and the challenges have made me strong. It was never my intention to keep running it myself for this long. I realized I had made a real commitment to this community whenever I considered shutting down the project because finances were tight.

800 email newsletters later, I am more committed than ever. I am okay with living the lonely life ahead of the curve and I do not expect that to change any time soon. My life is not about being popular. My purpose is about making a difference and I can honestly say that  when I look around me today, I can see that difference. Now, my life is getting easier, too.

More people are waking up and recognizing the impact of our daily choices and their power to change our world.

While I might sometimes feel like I am about ready to be committed for treatment, the truth is I have already made my biggest commitment of this life. Thank you for giving me a reason to share and connect and continue to embrace my own special brand of crazy.
