Time out

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” Robert Louis Stevenson

This week, we appreciate feeling well.

All it takes is a few days with an enthusiastic flu bug to remind us of how good it feels to eat, relax and sleep through the night without incident.

Every once in a while, we create the perfect situation for illness to flourish and over the past few days it was my turn.

There was nothing to do but rest and reflect. Interestingly, I lost my digital appetite as well. I had time like I rarely have to allow my mind to wander wherever it wanted to. Watching the movie in my head was an interesting experience in the absence of any desire to consume media of any description. There are a lot of thoughts floating around up there that rarely get any attention.

I realized just how important it is to give myself time to dream.

Reading about Ifzal Zaffar, it is easy to see just how important that is.

When we shared his story, we were contacted by Ka Wai from Yau Tsim Police District inviting young ethnic minorities to join their Project Gemstone for free weekly Chinese classes — a good use of time.

We all have the opportunity to stretch time this Saturday night, switching off for Earth Hour and taking a time out from our electrified existence. Every time I do this, I am surprised by the number of things I leave plugged in all the time for no reason beyond the convenience of saving a few steps or seconds.

Life slows when we step out of the stream.

I started wondering if I had somehow created this bout of sickness to give myself a needed time-out but it wasn’t much of a time out. I was too uncomfortable to relax, too hungry to rest and too nauseous to eat. I decided that there are more pleasant ways to detox and more enjoyable ways to take a break when the time is right.

In the meantime, I am planning a little break into every day as I juggle clients and wrangle to-to lists.

Unlike money, we only have the time we have and there is no credit or savings or bonus. Planning ahead can offer some assistance, remembering to leave space for the unexpected and the spontaneous with enough flexibility to change our mind.

If you have more time than money at the moment, HK heartbeat is sponsoring one ticket to join Awakening of Love later this month simply by telling us why you or someone you love would appreciate the time out.

It seems hard to believe only a few months have passed since my friend Kim taught me the value of time and the importance of spending it wisely. Today, on her birthday, I am revisiting the lesson.

What does your budget look like?
