Purpose

“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” William James

This week, we are sharing a purpose.

Since writing last week, I have been blessed with warm thoughts and kind words from friends and colleagues and family as I traveled home unexpectedly to say farewell to a dear friend who had become a sister.

This morning, I am back from a big week and determined to honor her memory by living each day with a fresh sense of purpose.

This experience is a clear reminder of why I created the heartbeat community all those years ago. We support each other in times of sadness and in times of joy. We rely upon each other to move through the challenges in our path and our relationships become deeper as a result.

Over these past few weeks, I have drawn on a strength I didn’t know I had to support a family close to my heart. I am rewarded with a new strength and a sense of peace, knowing we are here for each other and always will be. Although her death was completely unexpected, Kim had prepared her family well for this departure. I am proud of her and the children she raised to be friends. Her hard work is paying off as they lean on each other and their dad to properly grieve their loss and remember their mother well.

Through this experience, I started thinking about the difference between planning and preparing.

We plan for an outcome. We prepare for the unexpected.

Much of our time is spent in preparation. Coming together around a shared vision, we may not be planning as much as preparing for what comes next. When facing the unexpected, we can rely on those around us whose purpose closely resembles our own. We come together to join forces and draw strength from each other.

In the same way, we come together in times of joy to celebrate our success and our milestones.

This Saturday, we will gather to celebrate our Fifteen years of HK heartbeat together. With thanks to our friends at Metta, we have a beautiful space where we will gather in the spirit of authentic connection. Drop by to say hi, exchange a hug, introduce yourself at our open mike and share your experience with our community.

It is essential that we make the effort nurture our connections in the real world with meaningful intent for positive change.

What would you like to share?
