HK heartbeat -- Week #847 | 22 October 2019 |
Happy birthday to HK heartbeat! For the past 18 years, I have curated a weekly update of natural Hong Kong and, though the name changed four days after I clicked send, the original announcement below is still valid today - with the addition of the website I launched in 2003 and social media channels that didn't exist at the time. This regular reflection over time has provided deep insights into how we arrived at where we are now -- further ahead than I ever imagined in some areas and behind in others. The direction we are headed has been positive from day one and the pace of change is accelerating. The timing seems perfect for yesterday's lovely note from one of our pioneers inviting us to contribute to Ways Forward with a day of public dialogue and round-table discussions -- thank you, Christine Loh. Step into community leadership and help us win that Nobel peace prize so we can follow in the footsteps of our talented HK Philharmonic. Music heals. On the pollution front, Ikea has announced plans to buy back furniture, circular is becoming fashionable, expanded plastic bag restrictions are in the works and new tech has designs on making old plastic as good as new. The world's top 20 carbon emitters might be behind this week's air quality mask alert. New challenges lie ahead as China urges late-night consumerism and encourages alcohol sales while non-alcoholic spirits gain traction. We can mark the change of season by turning away from consumption, clearing our winter wardrobe and giving beautiful clothing to the collection organized by helpers for helpers who often arrive with no winter/warm items (or do not have extra cash to spend on new ones) on Saturdays and Sundays 10am-1pm opposite Statue Square (the fountain area) in Central. Join a cleanup. Support a volunteer organization. Hug a tree. Get involved. Listen to your own heartbeat. Naturally,
