With all Hong Kong museums offering free entry in January, the timing is perfect for an international exhibit designed to raise awareness and change habits.
“Out to Sea? The Plastic Garbage Project” showcases the scale of plastic marine litter, types and where it comes from. Visitors are introduced to the chemical composition, classification and recycling processes of plastics and the effects of plastic waste on birds and marine animals.
The exhibit includes art pieces inspired by local schools who used the plastic collected on local beaches, with the help of Ocean Recovery Alliance, to tell their own story of awe, causing many to also think, why it is there in the first place.
Organizers aim to help us realize we must cut our consumption of plastic and encourage the recycling of plastic immediately.

With all HK museums offering free entry in January, now is the perfect time to visit “Out to Sea? The Plastic Garbage Project” at Hong Kong Science Museum in Hong Kong, showing until February 17.

Hong Kong is first place in Asia for “Out to Sea? The Plastic Garbage Project” having been in 19 museum exhibits in Europe by the Museum Gestaltung Zurich.
Opening Hours
- Monday to Wednesday, Friday: 10am-7pm
- Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: 10am-9pm
- Closed on Thursdays (except public holidays) and the first two days of the Chinese New Year
- Box Office opens at 10:00 am and closes one hour before the Museum’s closure
