Free fertilizer headed for the dump

Tonnes of nutrient-rich seaweed that washes up on Hong Kong beaches every spring is collected by urban services, loaded on to trucks and hauled off to landfills in big plastic bags.

Seaweed is easy to collect, easy to use and provides many benefits for plants both indoors out. Just a little dry seaweed will go a long way — or compost in a bucket of water to prepare liquid fertilizer. If you didn’t plan ahead, a short walk on any Hong Kong beach will reveal a variety of containers that can be up-cycled or recycled to carry your precious cargo safely home.
