This week, we acknowledge what is essential. Vital to life is the air that we breathe and breath has become our top priority. To control the spread of airborne infections, we cover our mouth and nose. Water is as refreshing as it is hydrating and we need ours to be fresh and clean. Wearing a cloth mask cuts down on medical surgical waste reaching the sea. Though we rarely see how food is grown, we rely on grocers to keep us fed. Restaurants serve people whose daily service keeps the wheels turning. Healthcare professionals, cleaners and drivers need our help. Using less resources means there is more for everybody. Our choice to cut non-essentials is our show of support. We lessen their burden when we re-think our needs. Caring for each other is caring for our earth. No one is a stranger to the virus out there. On my morning walk down to the beach recently, I noticed a startling new trend in this quiet, remote, tiny fishing village – used surgical masks discarded into the river, ready to be swept into the sea with the next rain.
