Quiet time

This week, we are looking inward.

We have good reason to take a break from the mass media news and from social commentary as tensions rise and the culture of fear takes hold in our global conscience. Images from 7 days ago are flashed across the headlines as if they could be happening right now.

When we feel unsafe in our uncertain world, bad news gets our attention. Our attention drives the news ratings up. With increased ratings, broadcasters sell more advertising. More advertising means better profits so more time is spent on more detailed discussion to extend the story and sell more advertising. Bad news profits when we believe the solution to our problem belongs to someone else.

Our fear peddlers must be very happy with the loop this week.

Even the Earth Hour campaign is called problematic, blamed for not doing enough, as critics point to the uselessness of switching lights off for an hour and the strain on the grid of powering everything back up.

Anger can be channeled constructively, but blame has 1 finger pointing outward while 3 point back. The world around us triggers unconscious, unresolved feelings in our internal world. It is so much easier to hold others responsible than to address our own fears and pain.

There is an abundance of unconscious triggers in our world at the moment.

We can feed on the fears and escape with our favorite addictions or we can get ourselves on public transportation and remove ourselves from the thick of it. Luckily, it is easy in Hong Kong to find someplace remote where we can connect with the peaceful permanence of nature to heal our own wounds and nurture our own dreams without the distraction of non-stop naysayers and doomsday story-sellers.

Even if we can’t schedule the time to make a day trip, we can unplug and connect for a bit of quiet time to reflect on the thoughts racing around in our mind and reconnect with the calm that exists at all times in this present moment.

As the ever-present darkness emerges into the light of day, decisions are taken to do things differently.

I am proud of our natural Hong Kong community for our shared commitment to offer programs and services to consciously restore balance inside and out.

When we recognize and address our own unresolved and out-of-date issues coming from our own inside, we can begin to identify and release fears about what is happening outside. We become more able to respond to any situation … more response-able or responsible for our own life that is simply a sum total of our own choices.

How do you balance out with in?
