In the beginning, there were a few of us constantly searching for natural products and services and relying on each other to share our contacts when we discovered them. At the time, there was no need to question authenticity because only people who were personally invested entered the market … we were the unpopular and really uncool kids. Brands had no interest in being natural or organic and no one was aiming for healthy in a market where money rules and convenience is king. SARS and food scares and overflowing landfills and death by pollution in a new digitally-connected world changed all that.

Hong Kong is finally catching up with us and recognizing the connection between personal wellness, social responsibility and corporate sustainability. Our time has arrived.

We are beginning to see how beautiful small can be.

Green is everywhere. Fashion magazines feature eco-chic designs. Popular technology uses fewer resources and saves more energy. Corporate practices are examined. Authentic farmers are recognized for their contribution. We are reading labels and learning about ingredients. We want to know where our products were made, what they are made from, how they got here and whether those making them for us are being treated with generosity and compassion. We consider carbon footprints.

We are creatures of habit, yet we constantly seek out new experiences. Maybe it’s time to try something new.

At heartbeat, we are meeting the growing demand for natural lifestyle information from people discovering natural choices every day. Digital technology plays a role in shaping change. Information is easier to access. We carry computers in our pockets and handbags. Still, with the amount of information out there, it isn’t always easy to find what we’re looking for. In a world where green-washing is the new propaganda, we rely more on word-of-mouth and friends for references and recommendations. We share our new discoveries. We connect and stay connected through social media. We build communities around shared values and interests.


In the beginning …

I am still coming to terms with the concept of sustainability. Growing up on family farm on the prairies, I lived a zero-waste lifestyle by necessity. Nothing was thrown away if there was even a remote possibility that it might be used for something else. When she had to buy something, mom selected items from the supermarket packaged, selecting jars that would work for home-made jam. I have a deeply personal understanding of where food comes from and what real food tastes like. We grew and preserved enough vegetables to feed a farming family of 8 (6 kids) through the Canadian winter. We raised laying hens, roasting chickens, turkeys, milk cows and beef cattle, so pretty much the whole pantry was homegrown. My dad would tag a steer for our freezer so it didn’t get the hormone shots given to the rest of the feedlot. And, yes – my oldest brother and his sons are now fully modern Monsanto-addicted farmers using monster equipment to grow Roundup-ready crops and I stopped arguing with them decades ago because (apparently) I know nothing about production costs. HK heartbeat is the partly result of those many arguments. They think I’m nuts. I know I am a little crazy for attempting to turn this passion into a business, but I’m okay with that. Kinzie, Founder
