This week, we are being entertained.
I am watching as the mass news media shifts away from factually reporting current events, morphing into an infotainment machine complete with flashy graphics presented over dramatic music as newscasters provide commentary and predictions on a local national election as though it were a global sporting event.
Movies are filling the void and entertaining us with information.
Skin color dominated the news around an annual awards show this year. Inside, top honors went to films whose writers covered war, immigration, financial corruption, domestic violence, colonial greed and our growing need for another planet. We were given a glimpse into future madness if we steer the course we are on.
Recipients spoke of being socially motivated in their work.
The winners of best film dedicated their Oscar to survivors and to an investigative journalist who shone a spotlight on a strictly taboo subject and they expressed their gratitude for raised awareness. The award will attract attention to a story that represents ongoing institutional sexual abuse affecting millions of children around the world today. No public campaign could achieve these results.
The March issue of National Geographic magazine solves world hunger with ugly produce. In China, an appeal to vanity went viral when the dean of the Xi’an Zhongda Ear Nose & Throat School tackled air pollution on Weibo by claiming smog can make children ugly.
We have become reliant upon bytes and gifs, rarely taking the time to read the full story, counting on others to do the heavy lifting. We prefer just the highlights and we want them packaged in brightly colored wrap topped with a shiny bow to catch our attention. We mustn’t be surprised by the frauds and the hoaxes when they are finally exposed by those who do take the time.
Many routes are available leading to the many solutions already at hand.
Whatever it takes, let’s head in that direction.
