This week we are in search of homes.
One of life’s great stressors, moving offers an opportunity to put into practice all of those wonderful tips and tricks for clearing and de-cluttering regularly shared by our feng shui experts.
In Hong Kong, this is no zero-waste project, but approaching tasks mindfully can bring the job closer to the goal. Recovering from a recent back injury slowed down the entire process and the positive impact was significant. Working around physical pain requires constant attention in the present moment.
Plastic wrap cannot be re-used so by taking care unwrapping, perhaps it can be recycled. Cardboard boxes can be reused using social media to find a local match with someone looking. Finding space for an item means evaluating its use and deciding whether it will earn its rent or if might be used more productively by someone else. The secret to reducing the waste as much as possible is to take time, be thoughtful and act thoughtfully.
Fortunately, the latest move happened during T1 and the air was fresh enough to open all the windows and doors and switch off air-con so we didn’t need to cool the great outdoors.
The day began with a surprise visitor who flew in the window. After a bit of coaxing and balancing on a broom, relocation to the rooftop and a breather rest, this baby Crested Grohawk took flight with a grace that and served as a perfect reminder of the joy of living light.
Nature provides an abundance of simple solutions.
The larger issue is sifting through cartons of stuff and wondering how it all got here. It takes time and energy to find new homes for many still-useful items to free up precious living and working space while not using up precious landfill space.
Local organizations like Crossroads International and St James Settlement have have collection programs. WhoGotStuff is an online platform and Second Hand Exchange is operated by the EPD to address the issue, while electronics require special attention. This is an area where there is tremendous potential for improvement and your suggestions are most welcome.
What is your relationship with your stuff?
