Inside out

This week, local life feels inside out.

Even though I grew up on the Canadian prairies where minus 40 degrees is a seasonal temperature, I have struggled keeping warm these last few days. Having the temperature on my bedside clock does not help, waking up to 7.5 degree mornings inside my room.

My struggle to keep warm is directly related to the energy inefficiencies of this place I now call home. Warming a room with space heaters is a challenge when the wind blows the curtains through closed windows in concrete buildings with no insulation.

In all the news coverage of mountaintop rescues and snow gifs and warnings to dress warmly and not light fires indoors, there is no mention of how poorly our buildings are constructed.

Through the magic of social media, I have learned that many are sharing expert knowledge that oil radiators are designed to run 24/7 and are doing the same with electric heaters while others are using gas ovens to heat their flat. This might be sound advice with the price of oil predicted to reach US$5/barrel. In these last hours of ancient sunlight, not so much.

I visualize an infrared camera measuring waves of heat escaping our efforts to stay warm.

I can’t help but imagine how much energy we lose during the rest of the year when air conditioning runs at full power, not to mention entire commercial complexes built without doors or any other protection from the elements because they are designed with the aim of improving traffic flow for increased sales.

We can stop using plastic bags and we can ask fast food chains to get rid of straws and we can petition supermarkets to stop packaging individual vegetables in cellophane wrapped styrofoam trays and we can promote electric cars and we can encourage local agriculture and rooftop gardens, but we have a long way to go before we can come close to claiming zero waste status.

Dress in layers, wear a hat, drink fresh ginger tea, prepare hearty home cooked soups, catch up on cuddles …

How are you keeping warm?

Naturally,

TarotDrama

The personal and collective unconscious and beyond

Psychodrama originated in the 1920’s and is practiced in clinical, educational, community and business settings around the world. It involves creative action techniques where a participant is guided by a psychodrama director to enact their story. By choosing group members to play significant roles, they develop insight, raised consciousness and increased capacity for spontaneity. The Voyager Tarot cards act as a catalyst for delving into the personal and collective unconscious and beyond. Julie uses the cards as a warm up to personal exploration of past and present stories connecting to and preparing for future stories. Advance booking until Dec 31.
