This week, we appreciate the cool, blue ocean.
We are surrounded by the sea and we love getting out on a boat, grabbing a ferry to the outlying islands or heading to one of our many local beaches.
Thursday’s Dragon Boat festivals will attract many to the water.
As we gaze out at sea, we see our plastic habits. Styrofoam containers bob around in the harbour. Local beaches are littered with single-use, single-serving plastics — bottles, plates, straws, stirrers, wrappers, cups, containers — much of it washed down from the hills in recent rains.
Our love affair with cheap and convenient is revealed in the tonnes recovered at local beach cleanups where volunteers collect, count and catalogue our trash with results that highlight our daily routines.
96% of the 1.4 million plastic bottles (2014) we use every day ends up in local landfills, even plastic that can be reused by a growing recycling industry determined to recover lost oil energy.
Tomorrow’s World Oceans Day raises awareness about the issues.
Conservation International will premiere Coral, the latest episode in their Nature Speaks series at Our Underwater Living Treasures, a family friendly exhibit at The Marine Museum. The Ocean Recovery Alliance invites sports users to participate in the Big Five Cleanups or take photos and geotag trash hotspots in their See – Share – Solve Global Alert app.
When we hit the beach, we balance winding down with picking up, leaving with more than we arrived and taking the opportunity to pick up plastic so it does not end up in the stomachs of our beautiful marine life who mistake it for food.
As the summer seasons swings into full gear, we are preparing for spontaneous, flash-mob-beach-cleanups — a perfect way to engage our copycat culture and step into our role as community leader. In our experience, once we start picking up rubbish, we are not alone for long. Joiners want to be part of the solution but they might not be ready to take the lead.
How are you leading the plastic challenge?
