This week, we are looking back.
In these final days of 2016, we reflect on a year filled with positive change.
Watching the annual corporate media round-ups, we must forgive ourselves when we fall into the rushing stream of negative thinking. The popular sentiment is that we are at the end of a horrible year and many just want it to be over already. We are very sad indeed.
Our feelings are influenced by grief we share at what appears to be a growing death toll of cultural influencers.
It might be helpful to remember that only 100 years ago in 1917, life expectancy was 54 for American women and just over 48 for men. The global celebrity is coming of age as our early pop culture superstars reach the end of a full life. 20 years ago, before the music video and then YouTube brought our favorites to our fingertips in our own pocket, we wouldn’t have felt as close to these artists. We are blessed and this is the beginning.
Looking beyond our social bubble of what is trending, it is easy to find plenty of evidence that 2016 was a very good year.
Closer to home, our community experienced no shortage of achievements. The plastic tsunami birthed a homegrown movement of weekend beach cleanups and country park cleanup meet-ups. A Canadian teacher inspired hundreds of volunteers to feed the homeless and walk in kindness. Our local government decided to end the ivory trade and create a new country park. Festivals reached a new high with the opening of the Central Harbourfront to music and yoga and art fairs. New online healthy living publications reached more people looking for healthy living options.
One of the most exciting trends is the rising number of food businesses stating their commitment to clean, healthy and fair food with an abundance of fresh options in fine dining, fast food, home delivery, convenient snacks and private kitchens. In the world’s most dynamic city of food lovers, this is where change can have the greatest impact and potentially spark changes in other lifestyle habits.
Meet some of our change-makers when we gather for A Fresh Start in January.
As the sun sets on another remarkable year, let’s set clear intentions for continued compassion in our community.
