This week, we are celebrating family.
Like most of us, my experience with the people who raised me has changed dramatically over time. They were my entire world until I was ready for a new one and even though I moved on, I never moved away. When I did move away, I kept moving further and further away until any move would bring me geographically closer. It wasn’t then I began looking at family a little differently.
Long haul trips became fewer as I gained a new sense of home for the holidays.
In this season filled with family cliches, it is helpful to remember that some of us struggle more than others with knowing what to expect from our family and sometimes the situation is unhealthy at best and can be toxic or even dangerous.
In leaving home to create home, we discover the importance of relationships.
Even when distance isn’t an issue, our family of choice becomes our support system as we nurture new friendships, share ourselves and learn how to trust each other and how to be honest and open and vulnerable. This family transcends the Christmas shopping list.
This is the time of year we reach out to those who are there for us all ways.
It is also the season for sharing our good fortune with others in our community.
I invite you to connect with our family and Celebrate Community with us on Thursday evening. The invitations went out late and many are already committed for the evening, but we will be there to share the love in an intimate gathering.
We are heading into the silly season when shopping, eating and drinking can leave us a little impatient. It is the perfect time to reconsider our holiday traditions, rethink the shopping list, purchase less plastic and give our presence with our presents.
How will you celebrate family in the weeks ahead?
