Harvest

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” Robert Louis Stevenson

This week, we are enjoying the bounty.

We have arrived at the time of year where local farms are bursting with an abundance of fresh, colorful, delicious, healthy fruits and vegetables.

Our farmers occupied Central on Sunday, selling their natural luxury produce alongside luxury brands Cartier, Chanel and Piaget.

Now in it’s 10th year, the day is an annual celebration and an annual marker of the rising interest in health and sustainability. Seeing kids of all ages pot their own tiny green seedlings was a highlight.

If you missed the market, the Star Ferry Organic Farmer’s Market happens every Sunday from 10am-5pm and regular markets are held throughout Hong Kong.

Many farms welcome customers for shopping and learning experiences.

Considering the cost of transport and packaging and distribution, eating food from the neighborhood is an easy way to reduce our resources. A bonus is the nutrition in freshly harvested food — much better than long-haul varieties, organic or not.

One of our greatest local challenges is access to food that isn’t grown with chemicals that are damaging to the environment and to our health. One of the ways we address this challenge is with a detox.

Today, this trendy approach to health is getting a new twist, as shared by our friends at Green Queen in their new digital detox feature.

We will all have an opportunity to do a mini-digital-detox next week during Earth Hour when everyone switches off for the evening. We use the time to review our digital addiction and kick start new habits to release the hold mobile technology has over us.

In the meantime, we are imagining the fame and fortune of having a sweet treat named after us in Happy Cow‘s new crowd funding contest to raise money for their new retail location. There can never be too many sweet treats … especially ones good and good for us.

All work and no play — well, we know how that goes.

Nature reminds us there is a time for everything — a time to grow and a time to rest. As we near the end of the local growing season, it is useful to remember how much energy goes into what we are growing in our own lives.

Life in the fast lane requires a lot more energy than a slower rural existence.

What seeds have you planted for harvest?
