HK Farmers Markets

Shop local – buy direct – farm to table guaranteed

Keeping track of the local markets is as easy as predicting the weather in Hong Kong. We have just updated our list to help you stay fresh. When local first began trending in 2013, a lot information popped up all over the internet and much of it is now outdated.

While the number of local farms in Hong Kong has exploded over the past 10 years, local markets are not keeping pace with the growth. Recent scams where lead-tainted mainland vegetables were sold as organic produce means the best way to buy local produce is to hug a local farmer.

Space remains an ongoing issue in the world’s most densely populated city. High rental rates mean stallholders struggle to cover costs, much less make a profit. Local logistics means a lot of effort and expense getting produce to and from the locations so great ideas regularly fizzle out.

While a few of the markets have been running for many years while some are new to the scene and others have already come and gone — just like any trend. In our view, shopping local is the way of the future as it becomes clear that small farms are the surest way to food security.

We have work to do convincing local developers you can’t eat money …
