Together

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Helen Keller

This week, we are in this together.

When we choose a healthy, balanced, natural lifestyle, we begin to recognize how closely everything is connected.

We keep our space clean, our air clean and our water clean in order to grow clean food and make clean products.

When we value profit today over life tomorrow, the challenge gets bigger.

Over the past month, we have seen the fruits of our progress washing up on beaches all over Hong Kong. The cycle is not new, but volume of waste is greater this year. This is happening at a time when a growing number of people choosing healthy options are not willing to stand back and wait for someone else to take the lead.

Some of our friends have been quietly cleaning local beaches every weekend for years but this summer the general public stepped in to help and the #popupcleanup was born.

It was our efforts, not the trash, that made international headlines. It was the headlines, not the complaints, that led to the beach cleanup by government executives a few weeks ago. It was their efforts that inspired them to take a wider look at the problem. And it is in finally admitting the problem and looking more closely that real solutions can be considered.

The voices of cynics are drowning in the excitement of the rest of us.

While the world around continues to feed itself with fear and pain, our world is celebrating positive change led by a few and followed by many. Growing awareness of our plastic addiction is step one. Understanding the connection between waste and water and food and our environment leads to creative nature-based ideas that will change our commercial ecosystem as quickly as a forest fire or a flood or a landslide or a tornado or an earthquake or a super-typhoon.

This is the first time in my 24 Hong Kong years I have seen the government and the NGO’s and the public so aligned on anything.

These are the moments when we begin to see everything is possible.
