This week, we are grateful for support.
Having spent the past few days grieving a close family member on my own, I have connected with the truth that we live in a time and place where mourning from a distance is a shared experience. Family has taken a new form in our lives and friendships stretch around the world. We will not always be there in person to say goodbye and share our memories in the comfort of community.
We continually nurture new relationships so we can reach out for help in times of need.
For those of us on our own, help takes many forms. Over the holiday, I received news the volunteer coordinator for Hong Kong Dog Rescue will be requiring urgent medical treatment not covered under her teachers insurance. One of her friends started a campaign to fund the additional costs and I encourage you tomake a contribution. Much of the good that happens in Hong Kong happens on a volunteer basis. We can choose between giving our time or giving cash to make a significant impact in the lives of those who make a difference.
We have lots of options for giving both this month and you will notice a notice a few changes on the April calendar. Events are summarized on the main page with details now including posting date, contacts, venue details, social media links and a brief description. I invested my time to expand the listings so you can find out more about what’s happening even if you are not free to attend events listed on the calendar. If you find a broken link, please let me know …
It looks like the South Side is the place to be, with Ocean Art Walk running all month in Stanley. Stop by Repulse Bay next weekend to visit the Wellness 360 Fair and walk a labyrinth meditation on the beach out front.
If the litter left behind in country parks over the extended Easter holiday is any indication, people are spending more time than ever in nature. We owe it to our urban population to preserve a quiet, breathing space for residents whose lives are more stressful every day and provide an easy option to check out of the fast lane and do nothing for a while.
There are times when sustainable development means do nothing and that is a difficult concept to communicate when economic growth drives land use decisions. The Lantau Development Advisory Committee proposes an East Lantau Metropolis new town with 700,000 residential units and an MTR station for Mui Wo. I have a vision for a world-class off-grid community powered by wind, solar and waves that would put Hong Kong on the map for ecological conservation, green building design, electric public transportation and a locally grown organic food supply.
Our natural Hong Kong community is active with professionals across industries whose combined talents could easily make this dream a reality.
Is this an idea you can support?
