This week, we are having conversations.
Some of our fearless leaders are gathering in Paris to talk about balancing financial growth with human conservation while others are begging to continue making our 20th century mistakes in the name of economic progress.
The language of choice includes gentle words like climate change and emissions and sustainable development in lieu of more descriptive and perhaps more accurate terms like pollution and waste and greed.
Tune in to Listen Paris 2015 next weekend and unite with fellow lovers of our little blue planet devoting their music to 100% a renewable future.
At least people are talking and while social media is buzzing about the talks, awareness is growing about the issues we face with our 21st century choices.
Last week, Hong Kong chose incineration in favor of separation because we have yet to put a value on oil in the form of plastic. Ours is an addiction to a single-use, single-serving lifestyle designed to boost productivity by saving time and it is backed by the popular excuse we never have enough of it. Even healthy products are wrapped in tiny non-recyclable packaging in order to appear more affordable those who cannot afford the price and convenient for those who are simply too busy being busy — and do not get me started on that shrink-wrapped piece of fruit with the plastic label glued onto it …
As we move into the season of consumption in the name of celebration, I started my first-ever Advent Calendar to remind us of our shared values and I invite you to make time to join a casual gathering later this month where we will have conversations about Conscious Celebrations. Our Natural Holiday Guide will be ready in a few weeks with tips and tricks for a happy holiday that doesn’t cost the earth.
The December calendar is already filling with natural options. ReDress Asia is making our job easier with their Hong Kong Sustainable Shopping Guide for eco-fashionistas. Holiday gift markets popping up everywhere are popular with our members who will be on hand selling local, organic, handmade, healthy, social products for everyone on your list — even if you don’t have a list.
When the fear-based, time-limited, don’t-miss-out, secure-your-love marketing messages start getting a little too much, remember there are lots of options to slow down, take a breath and connect with what is really important. The phone is always on and friends are close at hand even then they are far away. We all live by the same clock and calendar and there is always more than enough time for a familiar voice, a friendly face and quiet conversation with a trusted friend.
Enjoy some time for reflection, count the blessings that filled a year not yet finished and prepare to begin our new year fresh.
