Medicine :: 7 April 2022 :: Issue #1056 :: Read online | Last week |
This week, we consider new old treatments. On World Health Day, some media outlets are beginning to report on the relationship between the health of our planet and our own personal health. This is a confirmed positive step forward. SARS-CoV-2 has raised the issue of health disparities, sparking renewed faith in the sunshine vitamin and the role it plays in virtually all of our body's operating systems, leading to a public review in the UK. One component of Hong Kong's first community health kits delivered to homes is generating fresh interest (along with familiar doubt) in Traditional Chinese Medicine so consult your TCM practitioner for the specifics of this herbal medicine initially developed to treat SARS 1.0. Many Hong Kong practitioners take an integrative medicine approach to most diseases and Iris Chang, President of the Practising Pharmacists Association of Hong Kong, suggests we "seek the advice of a pharmacist before taking any medicine whether it is traditional Chinese or western medication, particularly for any long term health issues". Contact the free WhatsApp hotline they set up to assist with determining relevant treatment in order to reduce the load on hospital services. Be reminded that all test kits, once used, must be treated as carefully as medical waste in order to prevent further infection. It was sad to see the April 1 seventh anniversary of our first byob policy marked with a storm of plastic bags in the name of public health. Some ground has been covered and we can this as a sign of unlimited opportunities on the long road ahead. We are learning about disposal so let's hope the ground won't be covered again for collection again by volunteers who have already picked up masses of garbage in our country parks this year. Local zero waste ventures are on the rise as the exodus floods social media with full households worth of abandoned home furnishings and kitchen goods when families depart quickly without a plan in place. Watch for the new directory listings in the pipeline. And, as we are well into the new month, it's seems only fair to remind you that the calendar is still available, but I am taking a break from time intensive task of producing the newsletter calendar. I recognize the value of the listings with the relevant links but I simply do not have capacity to invest in this free service at the moment while I ease into my new rhythm of doing more with less. My personal favourites include the HK Arts Festival free family concert available online from Monday and the City Nature Challenge coming up in just a few weeks. Blue skies lift our spirits and the intense pressure is lifting but we could all use a little dose of happy on the regular along with this mental first aid kit to keep us going. What's your best medicine? Naturally,
